Langkawi’s breathtaking landscapes were given a fresh facelift on June 26th, 2025, as 69 dedicated volunteers gathered at Red Rock Beach, Rebak Island, for an impactful cleanup event in conjunction with World Ocean Day. Hosted under the spirited theme “Make The Ocean Blue Again”, this event was not just about removing trash—it was about reconnecting with nature, fostering community, and appreciating the wonder of one of Langkawi’s renowned geosites.

Red Rock Beach, part of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, served as the perfect backdrop for volunteers to unite in their mission to preserve the environment. Nestled within the beautiful Rebak Island, this geosite boasts unique geological formations and rich biodiversity, making it a jewel of Langkawi’s natural heritage. Beyond cleaning, participants had the opportunity to explore the stunning scenery and learn about the critical role these areas play in maintaining ecological balance and boosting sustainable tourism.

Together, the volunteers successfully removed 80 bags of ocean debris, made up of:

  • 679 plastic drink bottles (38 bags)
  • 35 glass bottles (2 bags)
  • 30 bags of mixed trash, including floating foam debris, discarded fishing nets and lines, and other solid waste polluting the shoreline.

The cleanup was a collaborative effort between the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark Division, PUSPANITA LADA, Environment Idaman Langkawi, and Rebak Island Resort & Marina Langkawi. Each partner played a vital role in ensuring the event’s smooth execution and its lasting impact.

Beyond the physical act of cleaning, the event demonstrated the unity and passion of Langkawi’s community, as volunteers explored the geosite and gained deeper insight into the importance of protecting our oceans. Red Rock Beach, with its striking red-hued formations and serenity, offered participants a peaceful escape—a reminder of why preserving natural treasures like this is so vital.

As the day ended, participants left not only with satisfaction from their efforts but also with newfound appreciation for Langkawi’s stunning geosites and a commitment to sustaining its beauty for future generations.

The Langkawi Development Authority continues to drive efforts that celebrate and protect Langkawi’s status as a UNESCO Global Geopark, intertwining conservation, education, and community engagement to ensure a sustainable future for this island paradise.

Let’s keep the movement alive—together, we can make a difference and keep our oceans blue!
